Living With Diabetes – My Type 2 Story

Living With Diabetes - My Type 2 Story

I remember the night before I went for my diabetes test, I felt this illness was something that wouldn’t happen to me – thinking one had to be obese to be living with diabetes, I was so wrong. I had an unquenchable thirst and a few other symptoms, which was very unsual. I had a rash, I was suffering from bad headaches, constant tummy upsets and I was lethargic.

Thankfully my doctor after a visit recommended that I had some blood taken. The results came back confirming that I was a type 2 diabetic. I remember being sat in my car having heard the news and feeling in complete shock, I cried, it felt like my life was over.

Living With Diabetes – The First Steps I Took

My GP at that time helped me to decide on an endocrinologist and what diabetic clinic to attend, I was also put on medication. I used to visit the endocrinologist quite frequently over the first 18 months, plus I visited a nutritionist. It all seemed straight forward, however, I was struggling big time, I was scared, sad, and still in denial.

One evening whilst at my appointment with the endocrinologist, I realised that they were not the specialist for me. I felt he had no interest in me, how I was coping mentally with my diagnosis or how I was managing to control my glucose levels. I needed someone who understood my situation better. That evening I made the best decision for me, my health, and my diabetes.

I am telling you this as it can be difficult to trust yourself and make decisions when you are faced with so much but I decided to change to a different endocrinologist in another hospital and I can say that I have never regretted it.

Managing My Diabetes

Looking after oneself when diagnosed with type 2 diabetes is very important. Taking preventative steps may stop other illnesses from happening in the future.

These are my main tips and points for living with diabetes…

  • I regularly attend my endocrinologist, nutritionist, podiatrist and go for eye check-ups too.
  • Daily exercise and eating healthy (not saying I am perfect, I love chocolate).
  • Maintaining a healthy weight. I have always struggled with my weight – I find exercise helps a lot, my favourite thing to do is to get out in nature and walk, take in the scenery and enjoy.
  • The importance of proper blood glucose control.
  • Blood sugar level needs to remain in a healthy range.
  • Hypoglycaemia (Low Blood sugars) – If glucose levels get too low, we can lose the ability to think and function normally. The following are a few things to keep in mind to prevent low glucose levels.
    • Do not skip meals.
    • Avoid alcohol on an empty tummy.
  • If on medication check your blood sugars regularly.
  • Hyperglycaemia (High Blood sugars) – High blood sugars can cause damage or complications to the body if not kept in check over years.

I hope these tips have helped you. Everyone’s journey is unique, there is no one size fits all for type 2 diabetes.

There are many treatments out here to help and I would recommend researching as many as possible so that you can find what works best for you.

Remember a huge part of managing type 2 diabetes is developing a healthy diet, finding diet plans that best suit your lifestyle and holding a mindset of ‘Eat to win’ every day.

Fitness is important when managing, start small with an exercise programme and work your way up.
As I said earlier I love to walk and love building my steps and getting moving.
